ABOUT US
How did Healthy Families Get Started?
In 1985, an
intense home visitation demonstration project was initiated in
Hawaii in response to the alarmingly rising incidents of child
abuse and neglect. It proved to have a remarkable effect not
only on preventing child abuse and neglect, but also showed
potential for promoting healthy childhoods.
Learning of this promising new
program, Prevent Child Abuse America and the Ronald McDonald
Children's Charities launched the Healthy Families America
Initiative. It's purpose was to assist all states in developing
intensive home visitation programs. Today, Healthy Families
programs are present in all but 11 states. There are more than
400 sites across the country. In 2000, Healthy Families programs
reached more than 33,000 families nationwide.*
